Over the years I’ve been privileged to work with some inspiring visual artists, and I wanted to include examples of their
work on the site. Kate Mellor may be better known as a photographer than as a graphic artist, but I think her work in the
latter field is exquisite. Back in the 1970s, when we were both living in Hebden Bridge, she contributed the illustration of
my song Aunt Lucy Broadwood, the first image here, to the classroom book Pathways, which I edited with Mike Ezard.
The next three images acompany my song Fiddler’s Cross, and the last is from the song A Warning to Minstrels.
John Hodkinson is an old chum, and long-time collaborator. The second row is all his work. The first couple of images
were made in the early 1980s to accompany my song cycle Bones. Outwitting the Devil, The Last Wolf, and The Three
Gifts are digital prints created for The Tin Road Exhibition, inspired by stories John heard during our Tales at Martinmas
storytelling festival in Ross and Cromarty. For more of John’s work, visit www.harthead.com.
Beginning the third row is Suzanne Gyseman, a visionary artist who lives in the Highlands and who made the ink
drawing of the Travellers’ wagons that was so perfect for our Tales at Martinmas festival. The remaining images are all
of work made in storytelling workshops for young people in Ross and Cromarty as part of the award-winning Merry
Dancers Storytelling Project (2002-2005). The artists involved in the workshops were Jane Atterton, Jane Bregazzi,
Stephen Hayward and Inge Smith. Names of the artists are given where known.
